Depression Help: Advice for those in Pain
61When trouble of some kind haunts you and you do not know where or whom to turn to, the Bible could be your only solace, offering balms to your pain and a way out of depression. Ezra tells the Israelis in Nehemiah 8:10 that all they had to do was leave everything in the hands of God and asks them to engage themselves in eating and drinking and most importantly to share the food with those who do not have anything to eat. He assures them that it is a day meant to be dedicated to the Lord and they do not have any reason to worry.
The ever reliable David says in his Psalm 32:10 that only the wicked people are meant to go through sorrow. He further says that if you put your trust in the Lord, you can be sure Lord's kindness will engulf you. You simply do not have to worry at all. Isaiah 53:3-4 gives us an astonishing account of Jesus' sufferings. Opinions may vary about this but going by the happenings that Jesus went through centuries later, it is safe for us to assume that it is the case. The sufferings that Jesus went through did not make him waver. In almost a reference to Jesus' sufferings, Isaiah says that he was hated by men and was abandoned. He even says that men looked away when they came face to face with him. No one looked at him with esteem. And it is then that he makes us realize that it is not his doings that brought the sorrow on him but it was the sorrow that was legitimately ours to go through. God had shifted the burden from us to him. Doesn't it mean that we have no reason to be sorrowful because the Messiah will be there to take over from us?
That the Lord desires man to be good is made plain in Psalm 37:23-24. As a reward, the good man does not have to find way about. He will be guided by the Lord. He need not have worries about the dangers that may lie on his path. In the unlikely event of his falling down, he will not complete his fall. The Lord will be there to break his fall by catching hold of him.
Jesus himself assures that we can find peace in Him in John 16:33. We only have to seek Him out and ask Him. Jesus is practical too. He concedes that man can not escape tribulations and he must expect it. In the same breadth however, he reminds us that He had conquered the world and so instead of grieving, it is for us to be cheerful. There is no place for depression when you are with the Lord and believe in Jesus' ability and willingness to take over your troubles.
